Seminar Series June 2nd with Stephanie Goldstein, PhD: "A Research Agenda to Develop Effective Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions: From Proof-of-Concept to Optimization Studies"

Just-in-time Adapt Interventions (JITAIs) are interventions in which the goal is to deliver support in the moment and in the context when it is most needed, are powerful tools that can facilitate scalable, personalized medicine. These types of interventions, most often delivered via mobile health, have vast potential to improve health behavior change, mental health, and quality of life. However, JITAIs must be carefully developed in order to be feasible and acceptable to the target population, as well as achieve maximum clinical benefit. This talk reviewed the JITAI design framework and used an example from the presenter's prior work in developing a JITAI for dietary adherence to illustrate the development process. The conclusion of the talk covered the protocol and technology used to facilitate a microrandomized trial, an optimization research design specifically geared towards developing effective JITAIs.

Stephanie P. Goldstein, PhD, is an Assistant Professor (Research) at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center (WCDRC) of The Miriam Hospital and Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis on behavioral medicine, from Drexel University in 2018. Dr. Goldstein received training in obesity clinical research and cardiovascular behavioral medicine during her NHLBI-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the WCDRC & Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Her research focuses on digital health approaches (e.g., ecological momentary assessment [EMA], sensor technology, just-in-time adaptive intervention [JITAI]) to assess and intervene on weight-related behaviors implicated in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, particularly eating. She specializes in using EMA administered via mobile phone to study dietary lapses (i.e., discrete instances of dietary non-adherence)
