Center for Digital Health

covidThe MyCOVIDRisk app was a free and publicly available COVID-19 risk estimation and mitigation tool developed by the Brown-Lifespan Center for Digital Health in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been accessed nearly 1.3 million times since launch, demonstrating the acceptability of a free and simple web-based mobile application to estimate risk of COVID-19 transmission. For more information on the development of the MyCOVIDRisk app, please see our FAQ page.

How It Works

Users input the following information about the activity they want to know an estimated risk score for:

  • Self-Check Screener
  • Activity Location
  • Indoor / Outdoor
  • Activity Planned
  • Activity Level
  • Breathing Rate
  • Room Size
  • Ventilation
  • Duration of Stay
  • Number of People
  • Percentage Wearing Masks

Initial Risk Score

Users receive an initial risk score estimate, which can then be lowered by choosing mitigation measures such as:

  • Local COVID-19 Prevalence Data by County
  • Indoor / Outdoor Risk
  • Activity Level: Resting, Standing, Light Exercise, Heavy Exercise
  • Breathing Rate: Breathing, Speaking, Loudly Speaking
  • Room Volume
  • Ventilation
  • Duration of Stay
  • Number of People at Activity
  • Percentage of Mask Wearers

Mitigation Measures

Users are prompted to reduce their estimated risk score by inputting the following mitigation measures:

  • Wear a Mask + Select Fabric / Layers
  • Social Distance
  • Reduce Activity Time
  • Wash Hands Frequently
  • Wear Eye Protection
  • Increase Ventilation

Final Risk Score

Upon completion, users receive a final risk score individualized to the specific activity of interest as well as additional COVID-19 related resource links.
