IMPACT Lab

IMproving Personalized Addiction Care and Treatment

IMPACT Lab logo

The IMPACT Lab is a network of researchers, students, and trainees affiliated with Rhode Island Hospital and the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Our mission is to inform the development of innovative and empirically-supported interventions that aim to improve traditional addiction treatment through enhanced personalization and access. This work is informed through two interrelated streams of research:

  1. Identifying transdiagnostic factors that underpin the co-occurrence of mood/anxiety-based processes and substance use disorders
  2. Testing the efficacy of specialized intervention programs designed to promote recovery and well-being

IMPACT Lab Highlights

Congratulations to Prachi Bhuptani, PhD who received a visionary grant from the American Psychological Foundation! Her project entitled, “Understanding the Context of Shame in Opioid Use Disorder and Sexual Violence,” will conduct qualitative interviews with patients engaged in treatment for Opioid Use Disorder, who have a history of sexual violence, to explore the experience of shame.

Congratulations Prachi Bhuptani

Ongoing Studies

List of active projects and their descriptions.

CHOICE Study Logo The CHOICE study seeks to develop, through formative evaluation with patients and providers, clinical strategies that promote best practices for combined HIV and OUD care using long-acting injectable therapies.

iENDURE logoThe iENDURE study focuses on developing and pilot testing an innovative digital health intervention that aims to enhance motivation and increase tolerance of distress to facilitate recovery from OUD by providing skills training and motivational reminders in real-time.

ECOS LogoThe ECOS study aims to examine, through a mixed-method approach, the preliminary association of the COVID-19 pandemic with the provision of buprenorphine treatment and how changes to the delivery of care may impact patient-level outcomes.

Comorbidity of Opioid- and Anxiety-Related Symptoms and Disorders

Given the substantial morbidity and mortality associated with opioid use disorder and anxiety disorders, it is imperative to understand factors related to the high rates of co-occurrence in order to inform the development of specialized treatments for this population.

Leveraging COVID-19 to sustiain regulatory flexibility in the treatment of opioid use disorder

We must seize this moment of COVID-19 regulatory flexibilities to demonstrate the feasibility, acceptability, and safety of delivering treatment for OUD through a low-threshold approach.

Feasibility and acceptability of a digital health intervention to promote engagement in and adherence to medication for opioid use disorder

The goal of this study was to elucidate key elements surrounding the acceptability/feasibility and structure of an interactive computer- and text message-delivered personalized feedback intervention for adults initiating outpatient buprenorphine treatment.

About how training opportunities would work with IMPACT Lab.

Clinical Psychology Internship: Predoctoral residents will gain exposure to NIH-funded studies focused on the development and testing of tailored interventions designed to promote engagement in evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. This experience will facilitate learning in the domains of: treatment of substance use disorders; intervention development/clinical trial methodology; and use of digital health platforms.

Postdoctoral Fellowship: Postdoctoral fellows will receive training in intervention and prevention approaches to address the intersection of trauma and substance use with a focus on preparing fellows for a career in research.
