This is an elective program through which Alpert medical students undertake rigorous independent scholarship in a cross-disciplinary field of interest related to medicine, public health, engineering, or a biomedically relevant topic in the sciences, arts, or humanities.
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University will offer a novel digital health preclinical elective. Currently, only one other medical school in the US offers a digital health-specific course to its students, despite a recognized need and student interest in such curricula. This preclinical elective aims to address the lack of focus on digital health in medical education and to introduce students to the field and its potential applications for improving health.
Digital Health encompasses a wide range innovative fields including (but not limited to): mHealth (or “mobile health” using cell phones or tablets), health information technology (e.g., electronic health records), telemedicine (delivering healthcare at a distance via technology), health care social media, and wearable devices. Digital health is becoming an increasing presence in clinical practice and has the potential to revolutionize patient care and the health care system.
In the course, we will provide students with the frameworks and concrete skills to critically evaluate digital health innovations and develop and implement ideas of their own. While the course is by no means all-inclusive, it will cover a breadth of topics in digital health and will provide students the opportunity to engage in discussion with experts who approach the field from a variety of perspectives.
We have a limited number of opportunities for high-level undergraduates, medical students, and graduate students to conduct summer-term research with us.
Summer Research Assistantships (SRAs) are made available to students in Brown University’s Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) annually on a competitive basis. PLME students who are awarded an assistantship will receive a $3,500 stipend to carry out a research project on campus or at a Brown-affiliated hospital under the supervision and mentorship of a Brown faculty member.
